Assignment:
Perception Vs. Reality
Purpose
To allow students to compare their beliefs or perceptions about their career choice
with reality.
Logistics
- Instructor should explain definition of perception and students should complete
the perception questions before starting the modules.
- Instructor should tell students to keep this sheet and complete the reality questions
when finished with the modules.
- Upon completion of the reality questions, the instructor should have the class discuss
their answers to see how similar or dissimilar their perception/reality is about
their desired career(s).
Time Required
- Perception questions: 10-15 minutes
- Reality questions (and back of sheet): 15-25 minutes
Materials Needed
Copies of perception/reality sheet for all students.
Setting
Assignment can be given in class or for homework. It is recommended that students
discuss.
Assignment:
Academic/Career Trivia
Purpose
To allow students to test their knowledge of academic and career planning related
information.
Logistics
- Game can be set up as either a basic trivia game or as Jeopardy.
- Instructor will pre-determine point values for the questions and can create additional
questions customized to his/her course.
- If the instructor chooses to use the Jeopardy format, then the instructor can create
a poster board or Jeopardy PowerPoint template for the questions.
Time Required
- 20 minutes if the instructor is not adding additional questions.
- If the instructor adds additional questions to create a round of Jeopardy, then
the game will likely take 1 hour.
Materials Needed
Either poster board, PowerPoint, or trivia
handouts (if you are doing a basic trivia game and not Jeopardy).

Assignment:
Career Timeline
Purpose
To allow students to reflect on past career aspirations, current education plans,
and future career attainment goals.
Logistics
- Instructor will lead the class in a discussion about how career paths change.
- The instructor may want to fill out their career timeline by thinking back to when
they had just entered college. They may discuss how they ended up in their current
career.
- The instructor may lead the class through the activity, or the activity maybe done
individually or in pairs. If done in pairs, students should interview each other
and use the timeline as a guide for questions.
Time Required
10 - 15 minutes

Career timeline worksheets for the class.
Setting

Assignment:
Creating S.M.A.R.T. Career Goals
Purpose
To aid students in establish specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and tangible
career goals that will optimize their success!
Logistics
- Instructor should explain the benefits of goal setting.
- Instructor will explain what S.M.A.R.T. Goals are and review the explanation sheet
with the class.
- Instructor can determine whether the activity is done in class or as an assignment.
Time Required
20 - 30 minutes if the instructor decides the activity will be completed during
class time.
Materials Needed
S.M.A.R.T. Goals worksheets (3), including
the explanation, occupation and education goal sheet, and the goal statement sheet.
Setting
In class or as an assignment.
Assignment:
DISCOVER Activity
Purpose
To provide an additional exercise for students who have previously completed the
DISCOVER assessment and can access their log-on information and review their results.
Logistics
Instructor should assign this activity when other students in the class are taking
the DISCOVER assessment, whether in-class or for homework.
Time Required
30-45 minutes if the instructor decides the activity will be completed during class
time.
